A deepfake is AI-generated synthetic media in the form of video, image, text and audio that seems to be real but is artificially made.
The word “Deepfake” is a mash-up of the technology used to create fakes—“deep learning”—and its fraudulent effect.
Deepfakes aren’t necessarily entirely fake. Some deepfakes are spliced with real content to appear more real or to attempt to evade detection.
Deepfakes are both harmful and not harmful depending on their content and purpose. For example, a deepfake meme, piece of comedy or satire may be considered not harmful. However, deepfakes designed to mislead, harm, scam, abuse, incite violence or hatred, demean, injure or misrepresent can be devastating to the victim or victims.
